Why Services and Research for Drivers?
- For more than 20 years, the Immigrant Health and Cancer Disparities Center has worked to identify and eliminate health inequalities among immigrants and minorities.
- NYC taxi drivers are a largely immigrant population. 94% are immigrants, mainly from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and West African countries
- Our previous work found that taxi drivers have alarming rates of uncontrolled high blood pressure, and are at risk for heart disease and cancer, due to:
- Poor diets and a sedentary (inactive) lifestyle
- Stress
- Long hours
- Unstable income
- Discrimination
- Environmental exposures
- Poor health care access
- Lack of access to bathroom facilities
- Lack of parking
We strive to engage the voices of NYC for-hire vehicle drivers in the development of Taxi Network Programs.
